Networking

What are static IP addresses and how do I get them?
A static IP address is a unique numeric address that identifies you on the Internet that does not change. Static IP addresses can make it easier to host information, such as website, ftp server, remote access to a security camera DVR. The opposite of static is dynamic (can change). Qwest, as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), can lease an IP address to customer's who request them. You can order static IP addresses, or visit the static IP address FAQs page.
How can I port forward to a device behind my modem?
For a Web server:
Enable port forwarding for port 80 to the IP address of your Web server.

For an FTP server:
Enable port forwarding for port 21 to the IP address of your FTP server.

Security

What is NAT and does it protect my network?
Network Address Translation (NAT) makes it possible seperate your local network from the Internet. By creating a local-area network (LAN) that uses one group of IP addresses for internal traffic, and a second address or group of addresses for external Internet traffic (WAN). Since NAT provides more IP addresses to your LAN, this can help:
  • Hide your internal IP address when you are on the Internet, providing a measure of security
  • Increase the number of devices that you can connect to the Internet
  • combine multiple Internet connections into a single virtual connection to the Internet
